This website is a project created by students from Wayne State University. It will explain how many television shows that have a main issue of weight are harmful in American popular culture. The tabs for the specific shows are presented above.
Appearance seems to play a large part in American popular culture, whether it is a dramatic television show, full length movie, or an adrenaline pumping competition. By appearance, I am mostly talking about the issue of weight. There are many shows on television that portray show people that are extremely over weight, or extremely under weight. These shows may be a great deal of fun to watch, but are they benefitting society? These shows may actually be creating problems. The shows that have individuals who are obese allow people at home to witness obese life for their enjoyment or just a laugh. Shows such as True Life: I’m Obese, The Biggest Loser, and Celebrity Fit Club fit into that category. Do television shows like this allow people to act differently than they would act in front an obese person? Shows such as America’s Next Top Model and Project Runway though cause different problems by displaying individuals that are exceedingly under weight, which to some viewers might comprehend as how they need to lose weight to be accepted in society. Viewers of an average weight might be self conscious after those shows because it sends a message that in order to be beautiful, you must be model thin. Overall, the way that weight is shown on the television screen is a large problem in American pop culture.
